Beqa Yanuca Secondary School is in Raviravi Village on Beqa Island, off the south coast of Viti Levu. It has 110 students from Year 9 to Year 13, taught by 15 teachers, and 22 students from further away board during the week in two hostels.
Before solar, the school's very loud 5.5 kVA generator supplied power during the day when needed, and occasionally at night. A very small solar system powered a couple of rooms, but its lead-acid batteries had failed long before, so it only gave some power while the sun was shining – nowhere near enough for a school. The teachers' homes had their own small generators.
When we installed the 6.2 kW system in 2023, most of the school, the hostels and the teachers' homes were newly wired.
A donor also gave the school a new LED data projector and 20 kg of library books on sustainability.
