Dawara Primary School is in Dawara Village on Vanua Levu, with 50 students and 4 teachers. Before solar, the school had a generator far bigger than it needed, which ran when required during the day and for two hours each night to power the teachers' homes.
We expected the system to save more than FJ$3,500 a year on fuel, kerosene and fuel transport, and the teachers were excited about the new equipment that would bring to the school.
The 3 kW system, installed in October 2015, included 10 Yingli 275 W panels, an SMA SB3000TL grid inverter, an SMA SI4.4M off-grid inverter, four Aquion S20P batteries and a Clenergy ground-mount system. We replaced most of the tube lighting with LED globes and carried out some general electrical repairs.
The project was funded by the Fiji Water Foundation.
