Namara Village School is on Waya Lailai Island in the Yasawa Islands, with 89 students and 5 teachers. Some students board at the school's hostel.
In 2026 we installed a 13 kW solar array with 39.6 kWh of battery storage, bringing 24-hour power to the classrooms, the teachers' homes and the hostel. Starlink internet, laptops and smart TVs came with it, opening up online learning for students and teachers. A freezer for the hostel means food for the boarders can be stored safely. The same system powers Yasawa South Secondary School next door.
The school's head, Ulamila (Mila) Lagivalu, joined our founder, Rob Edwards OAM, at Pre-COP31 to speak about what solar means for remote Fijian schools. Read more
The school was funded through the Australian Government's REnew Pacific program. The system is part of The Solar Fund (Fiji), which monitors it and pays for its servicing and repairs, so it keeps working long after the installers have gone.
