Rukua Raviravi Primary School is in Raviravi Village on Beqa Island, off the south coast of Viti Levu. It has 179 students from Year 1 to Year 8, taught by 7 teachers.
Before solar, the school used its 5.5 kVA generator sparingly, to run the photocopier and some older desktop computers, charge the teachers' laptops and phones, and light the occasional night activity. It also had a small three-panel solar system, but its batteries had failed years before. It gave some power while the sun shone, but nowhere near enough for computer classes and the other activities a school needs power for.
When we installed the 6.2 kW system in 2023, three classrooms already had wiring that met the standard. We rewired all the other rooms to replace unsafe or missing wiring, and the teachers' homes, hostels, dining room and ablutions block now have new wiring, lights and power too.
A donor also gave the school a new LED data projector and 20 kg of library books on sustainability.
